Proof Seated Half Dollars
1878 50C PR67 PCGS. Beautiful target toning is suggestive of long preservation as part of an original proof set, and adds to the stunning eye appeal of this dazzling proof. A central bullseye of brilliance exists on both sides, surrounded by graduated shades of ivory-gold, magenta, royal purple, cerulean-blue, and sea-green toning.
The mirrored fields are essentially flawless and the strike is sharp, but not quite full. Slight weakness at the eagle's left talon is noted, an oft-seen occurrence on 1878 proofs. We also note a few light horizontal lines across the breast and microscopic, tiny marks on the knee where the strike is incompletely brought up. Nevertheless, the overall visual effect is undeniably impressive, befitting the coin's Superb Gem status. Tied for finest at PCGS, with just one numerically finer proof at both services combined. PCGS Population: 2 in 67, 0 finer (5/17).
