Early Dollars
1797 $1 10x6 Stars, Large Letters, B-3, BB-71, R.2, VF20 PCGS. Bowers Die State III. The right-side palm leaves have lapped edges, as usual. This variety is easily identified as the sole 10x6 Stars pairing for the 1797 dollar. Despite a reported mintage of 7,776 pieces, Bowers estimates 60,000 or so coins were struck bearing the 1797 date. Two obverse dies and three reverse dies were used. Variety BB-71 is about on par with BB-73 in terms of availability with perhaps 1,250 to 2,000 coins extant, mostly in lower grades. This Very Fine representative has pale silver-gray patina and softness around the edges. The motif outlines are clear and partial detail remains on the curls and wing feathers. Smooth without any major abrasions. Housed in an old green label holder.
