Indian Quarter Eagles
1911-D $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. Strong D. The 1911-D is a key date and a rarity in high grade. Choice examples are highly sought-after as a more affordable alternative to headlining MS65 coins. This was the first quarter eagle issue struck at the Denver Mint and also the first branch mint quarter eagle produced since 1879. Even in 1911, the denomination was not particularly needed in daily commerce. The Annual Report of the Director of the Mint ending June 1930, stated: "There is a call for [quarter eagles] each year, about the holiday season, for gift purposes, and during the remainder of the year they drift back to the Treasury. ... This piece is too small for ordinary circulation, and I recommend that it be formally discontinued by act of Congress."
The quarter eagle did serve a purpose in banks and to a lesser extent as backing for gold certificates, so its coinage was continued. But the inaugural Denver production amounted to only 55,680 pieces. This issue was lightly circulated, resulting in a supply of AU coins today. Mint State pieces typically show moderate abrasions. This Choice coin displays sharp detail and satiny orange-gold luster. A few minor grazes in the fields are unobtrusive. PCGS lists only 26 coins numerically finer (3/16).
