Proof Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1886 $3 PR64+ Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. The official PCGS estimate is that only 75 to 90 proof 1886 three dollar gold pieces survive in all grades, negating the inflated PCGS and NGC combined population figure of 164 pieces by a large margin. Only 142 proofs were reportedly struck. Deep Cameos are in the significant minority of survivors. We have handled such a piece on only nine occasions since 1993, with the most recent being a Gem Deep Cameo PCGS coin in our Long Beach Signature sale (Heritage, 9/2015), lot 4165, which realized $28,200. We estimate that as many as a third of Deep Cameos reported by the grading services are duplications. This Plus-graded, CAC-endorsed near-Gem displays full design definition and incredibly strong field-device contrast. A few stray lines in the fields determine the grade but have little visual impact. Population: 5 in 64 (2 in 64+) Deep Cameo, 14 finer. CAC: 5 in 64, 9 finer (5/17).
