Liberty Double Eagles
1857-S $20 Spiked Shield, Variety 20A, MS65 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 3010. Extremely rare in Mint State grades before more than 5,000 surviving 1857-S double eagles were recovered from the ill-fated S.S. Central America, this San Francisco twenty is easily among the finest of the "Ship of Gold" double eagle recoveries. It is amazing to think that a coin of this quality could survive unscathed through 130+ years in the obscurity of the ocean depths.
The luster is Mint-fresh and wonderfully vibrant. Marks are too minuscule to mention, and the strike is sharp as can be. There is seemingly no shipwreck effect at all on the frosted surfaces. The coin is struck from the oft-seen Spiked Shield die pair, named for two die lines located near the left shield edge -- one of which pierces the shield border. This Gem double eagle is housed in its numbered gold label holder of the original distribution, and accompanied by the original box and faux Ship of Gold book. The signed certificate of authenticity is absent.
