Liberty Double Eagles
1874-CC $20 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1-A. Production of Liberty double eagles increased significantly at the Carson City Mint in 1874, with 115,085 coins struck. The coins circulated heavily at the time of issue and most examples seen are in XF-AU grades today. Few examples survive in high grade and Doug Winter notes the 1874-CC "is rare and underrated in About Uncirculated-58." Mint State specimens are even more elusive.
The present coin is an impressive near-Mint specimen that shows just a touch of actual wear on the well-detailed design elements. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces retain significant amounts of original mint luster and show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade. PCGS has graded 21 numerically finer examples (5/17).
