Liberty Double Eagles
1883-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The Carson City Mint struck 59,962 Liberty double eagles in 1883, a small production total in absolute terms, but not unusually small in the context of the series. Most of the coins circulated heavily in the 19th century, but the survival rate was unexpectedly high and the 1883-CC is one of the more available dates in the Carson City series today. Branch mint Liberty double eagles were seldom collected before the 1930s, when the Gold Recall of 1933 focused attention on the series. An early auction appearance of the 1883-CC was in lot 2643 of the Sloane, Lenz, and Others Collections (Thomas Elder, 1/1936), "1883. $20. C.C. Mint. Uncirculated. Rare coinage." The lot realized $48, a reasonable price at the time. More recent sales include the MS61 PCGS specimen in lot 7568 of the FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2015), which realized $19,975.
This impressive Mint State example exhibits sharply detailed design elements and vivid orange-gold surfaces that retain much of their original mint luster. Both sides show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade and the overall presentation is quite attractive. Population: 69 in 61, 26 finer (5/17).
From The Reno Cache.
