Coins of Hawaii
1883 $1 Hawaii Dollar MS64+ PCGS. CAC. The Hawaiian silver coinage dated 1883 was minted in San Francisco. Four denominations were equivalent to U.S. dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars. The series also included a one-eighth dollar piece that was only issued as a pattern with an estimated mintage of only 20 pieces. Charles Barber created the designs that featured King Kalakaua I on the obverse. Each denomination was expressed in the local language, such as Akahi Dala for the dollar-sized coins. The San Francisco Mint issued 500,000 of these dollars, and most survivors are circulated or low-level Mint State at best. This near-Gem exhibits brilliant satin luster with dappled iridescent toning on the obverse and delicate gold toning on the reverse. Population: 23 in 64 (3 in 64+), 22 finer. CAC: 7 in 64, 8 finer (5/17).
