Bust Dimes
1829 10C Extra Large 10C, JR-1, High R.4, MS64 NGC. A scarce variety in all grades, the JR-1 is the sole 1829 dime with an Extra Large 10 C. The period after C is normal-sized, distinguishing it from the much more available JR-2 Large 10 C, which has a huge period after C. Other diagnostics include recutting on the denomination, where the C was entered far too high and then repositioned. Double dentils between stars 3 and 4 and above star 9 confirm the obverse. This Choice Uncirculated example is the finest-known at either service among the few JR-1 identified dimes. The surfaces display a sharp early strike, with much prooflikeness across both sides and pleasing golden-gray toning that deepens at the borders. Census (for the variety): 1 in 64, 0 finer (5/17).
