Proof Washington Quarters
1942 25C PR68 NGC. A loupe reveals thin slivers of iridescence at the extreme rims in shades of emerald and cherry, but this piece nonetheless presents as basically brilliant. The surfaces are expectedly unmarked throughout, as the grade demands. The mintage of 1942 proof quarters at 21,123 pieces may seem large compared to the 1936 mintages, but present-day proof production totals are exponentially larger; the reality is that all of the 1936-42 proof coins are more or less rare in high grade. Census: 22 in 68 (3 in 68 ★), 1 finer (5/17).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2011), lot 3475.
