Early Half Dollars
1802 50C O-101, T-1, R.3, VF20 PCGS. Tompkins Die Stage 1/1. A thick olive-brown patina covers both sides, with pleasing golden highlights that help define the devices and add life to the richly toned surfaces. The obverse appears to be about five points finer than the reverse, but both sides are remarkably free of large marks. A pair of criss-crossing lines is noted on the reverse (mostly obscured by wear) as well as a shallow scrape in the field stars above the right wing. Just 29,890 half dollars were produced in 1802, resulting in one of the most-sought dates of the early Bust half series.
