Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1854-O $3 XF45 PCGS. Variety 2. Past literature refers to two known die pairs for the 1854-O three dollar gold pieces, but more recent research by Dave Bowers and Doug Winter note that a single die pair is known in two distinctly different die states. The late die state, as offered here, has the reverse die lapped with the ribbon bows fragmented and with die cracks through the mintmark and elsewhere. This Choice XF example, an attractive honey-gold representative, clearly shows the late state characteristics. The surfaces are pleasing and minimally abraded.
