Liberty Double Eagles
1870-S $20 AU58 NGC. High date, 1 touches bust. The opening of the Carson City Mint in 1870 had little effect on the San Francisco Mint, which went about its business with ample sources of gold bullion while the Nevada mint had virtually none. Both mints produced gold coinage that circulated widely in the West, and few pieces were of numismatic interest to collectors. This near-Mint 1870-S twenty saw only brief circulation and it is quite attractive for the grade. The sharp and minimally abraded brassy-gold surfaces retain frosty luster and original eye appeal. NGC reports just 71 numerically finer pieces (5/17).
