Ancients
Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius. NGC VF. Lugdunum, 15-13 BC. AVGVSTVS DIVI · F, bare head of Augustus right / Bull charging right, head lowered, IMP · X in exergue. RIC 167a. RSC 137. Lightly toned, minor porosity.

The charging bull seen on this any many other coins of Augustus is thought to be a reference to his father's victory near the Greco-Italian city of Thurium over a rebellious band of slaves. Augustus was actually given the name Gaius Octavius Thurinus at birth to mark the event. The symbol of Thurium, seen on many of its coins, was a very similar charging bull.
