Hadrian (AD 117-138). AR denarius (3.39 gm). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 4/5, light scratches. Uncertain eastern mint, AD 128-132. HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P, laureate head of Hadrian right / COS III, Minerva standing right, holding reversed spear and shield set on ground. JPV Hill, Num Chron 1966, p. 139; cf. RIC 330 (Rome), BMCRE 471 (Rome), and RSC 295. Very rare! Toned, a few light scratches in field before neck.
Most early references give this type to the Rome mint; however, P.V. Hill demonstrated in a 1966 Numismatic Chronicle article that it and similar denarii with the obverse legend HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P are actually the products of one or more Eastern mints, probably struck while the emperor was visiting the region to supplement the local supply of specie.
