According to the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Triptolemus was a well known and respected man of great power from Eleusis who was in charge of the sowing of the grain and the milling of the wheat. As a recompense for the hospitality that Demeter had received at Eleusis when she was mourning for her daughter, she gifted him with agriculture and taught him how to take care of the fields, moreover, she also gave him a winged chariot to travel around the world to spread seeds of grain everywhere.
