Cuba
Republic Proof "Star" Peso 1915 PR64 NGC, Philadelphia mint, KM15.1. Benefitting from a superb appearance, with a base of olive tone over each side and wonderful iridescent shades of russet-gold and greenish-blue that come to life when the coin is tilted against a light. Considering its very modest mintage of only 100 pieces, we expect the popularity of this elegant type to only rise as time passes.

Designed by Charles E. Barber, this symbolic coin was minted at Philadelphia for the government of Cuba. It was the first true Cuban silver peso. From the end of the Spanish-American war until 1914, the U.S. dollar was the official currency of the country, but in that year the legislature created Cuba's first coinage in its own name when the National Currency System authorized a variety of centavos (1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 40) as well as silver and gold pesos (1, 2, 4, 5, 10 and 20). These were ordered to be minted at the Philadelphia Mint in 1915 and 1916. In the first year of coinage, 1915, the Cuban legislature prohibited the use of any coins or currency other than American and Cuban, the coins all being set at par values. Only 100 sets of Proofs of the first coinage, dated 1915, were struck, for the purpose of celebrating the first true coins of independent Cuba. In 1916, the design of the coinage was modified for striking in lower relief, with the star being flat and less prone to abrasions but lacking its former convex sharpness, as seen on this truly exceptional Proof.
