Venice. Alvise IV Mocenigo gold Osella of 4 Zecchini 1773 MS63 NGC, Paolucci 474, Nomisma-381/C (R5). 13.89g. A spectacular gold striking of the Osella. The obverse displays the nimbate lion of San Marco, while the reverse shows a four-line inscription with the date below, within a wreath. Fully brilliant and lustrous, with fully struck devices and no flaws worthy of mention. The gold Osellas were struck by the mint, in multiple weights of the Zecchino. The silver coin dies were used in this production, and the details for the coins of both metals is identical. The fineness of the gold used was .997; no finer gold could be produced at that time. These Osellas appear to have been produced for private individuals (probably for the nobility) who paid a premium over the gold value for the striking costs.
