Trajan (98-117). AE Sestertius, 103-111 AD. Obv. IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER DAC PM TR P COS [V PP]. Laureate bust right, with slight drapery on far shoulder. Rev. SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI SC. Triumphal arch, with massive side structures decorated with panels in bas-relief; on triangular tympanum is Jupiter standing; on frieze, I.O.M; the whole is surmounted by six-horse chariot driven by two Victories. RIC 572/573. C. 547/548 (Fr.40). AE. g. 28.05 mm. 34.00 RR. Brown patina. About VF/F. The identity of this monument has been much discussed. In most catalogues it is described as a triumphal arch, but it is actually a monumental gateway. Struck suggested that it was the monumental entrance (Porta) to the Area Capitolina. (See P.
