1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet, XF40 NGC. Noe-30, Salmon 12-G, R.3. 71.4 gn. The die work on this quirky variety is fairly crude: the tree trunk and ground line are thick and straight, the date runs into the inner circle of dots, and the lowest right-hand branch has been poorly recut. The placement of the legends is such that, given the small planchet size, they are never entirely visible. The obverse of this mid-grade example is fairly typical, with a nicely distinct tree, but struck so far off-center that little of MASATHVSETS is legible. A light scratch across the right half of the tree is noted. The reverse is remarkably well-centered for this variety. It is lightly struck between 8 and 12 o'clock, but has a bold date and denomination to accompany the strong obverse tree. Listed on page 41 of the 2018 Guide Book.
