1787 COPPER Immunis Columbia, Eagle Reverse, AU53 NGC. W-5680, High R.4. Crosby Pl. VIII, 8. Walter Breen suggested in his Complete Encyclopedia that these pieces were produced to support a national contract coinage proposal submitted to Congress by Matthias Ogden. However, recent research presented in the Ford catalog, part II, shows that these pieces were actually struck in 1788, after Ogden presented his proposal.
There is no evidence of undertype on this pleasing medium brown specimen. The devices have some olive toning, and the overall appearance is quite pleasing. The strike is soft at the centers.
