1796 Medal Castorland Medal, Silver, XF45 PCGS. W-9100, R.5. Opinions differ as to whether the Castorland was a presentation piece or was indeed struck for use as coinage, but there is no question that these pieces did circulate as money, with a silver content somewhat in excess of the federal half dollar. This piece shows a trace of die rust (as struck) around the handle, but no bulging near PARENS, rendering it an original specimen. There is a good deal of detail on this coin with only slight wear visible and a hint of luster in the recesses. It is uniformly gray in color with a couple of unobtrusive reverse digs. Listed on page 79 of the 2018 Guide Book.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 233.
