1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, S-3, B-4, Low R.3 -- Rim Damage -- PCGS Genuine. VG Details. The 1793 Chain cents were the first coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint for circulation. There were a total of 36,103 coins from five die pairs that were struck in early March that year, with deliveries from March 1 through March 12, a period of hazy and rainy days in Philadelphia when the temperature averaged 45 degrees. Dr. Benjamin Rush kept a daily log of the weather in 1793 as part of his published study of yellow fever. Although this piece has myriad surface marks and several rim bruises, the surfaces display acceptable chocolate-brown color. Our EAC grade AG3.
