Proof Liberty Nickels
1886 5C PR66 PCGS. CAC. In Premium Gem circulation-strike condition, the 1886 issue is scarcer than even the series key date 1885 nickel. That fact puts pressure on the high-end proof coins, even though they have a slightly higher mintage (500 more pieces were struck) than the 1885 proofs. This CAC-endorsed example is brilliant and lustrous with sharply defined devices throughout the untoned, moderately mirrored surfaces. The coin could easily pass as a prooflike business strike, although the razor-sharp hair strands and fully detailed ear of corn might give it away. Population: 115 in 66 (6 in 66+), 32 finer. CAC: 51 in 66, 23 finer (6/17).
