Seated Half Dimes
1848-O H10C MS66 NGC. V-4. As a date, this New Orleans issue is readily available thanks to the large mintage of 600,000 pieces. Three mintmark sizes exist for the 1848-O. Of these, according to the 2016 Bowers Guide Book of Liberty Seated Silver Coins, the Small O variant is rare. Al Blythe calls it R.7 in his reference. On this example, the O mintmark is round in shape on the outside, oval at the center opening, and appreciably smaller than both the Medium O and Large O mintmark varieties. It is also appreciably rarer. A lustrous, frosted Premium Gem, the coin is sharply struck and brilliant except for central splashes of almond-gold patina. Census (all mintmark varieties combined): 17 in 66, 3 finer (6/17).
