Bust Quarters
1815 25C "L" Counterstamp, B-1, R.1, AU55 NGC. A small mintage of 89,235 quarters was struck in 1815, all from the Browning-1 die pair as the sole variety, unless the enigmatic "E" and "L" counterstamped pieces are viewed as varieties. While most collectors do not subscribe to that line of thought, some believe the countermarks are Mint-related. Others, who specialize in counterstamps, care little one way or the other, but find the marks equally fascinating. No confirmed explanation for the counterstamping exists (yet), although plausible theories abound. This is a Choice example of the scarcer 1815 "L" type. Original surfaces display old silver-gray color that deepens at the borders and around the raised motifs.
