Colonials
(1670-75) FARTH St. Patrick Farthing, Breen-208, W-11500, VF30 PCGS. CAC. Breen's "Nothing below king" variety. Although Mark Newby's St. Patrick copper coins bear no inscriptions associated with the American colonies, the West Jersey legislature authorized these pieces to pass as a half-pence on May 6, 1682. This olive and chestnut-brown example is remarkable for its quality, far finer than usually encountered. The surfaces have a few trivial marks and hairlines, but exhibit none of the roughness usually associated with surviving examples. The brass splasher is almost perfectly centered on the crown.
The St. Patrick copper coins have always intrigued this cataloger (MRB) as they circulated in West New Jersey beginning in 1682, remaining in circulation until the early 19th century. Shortly after they entered circulation, the cataloger's seven-times great grandfather, William Merrill (1675-1740), resided in Hopewell, (West) New Jersey, north of Mark Newby's home. Listed on page 43 of the 2018 Guide Book.
