Colonials
1773 1/2 P Virginia Halfpenny, Period, Newman 22-S, W-1550, R.5, AU58 PCGS. The British Crown authorized coinage for Virginia in 1773, and many high grade examples survive from the Cohen Hoard that consisted of about 2,200 Uncirculated examples. However, few from that hoard were examples from the Newman 22-S die pair that remains solidly rated Rarity 5. Like many, this piece exhibits a faint die crack in the field below the bust. Despite a trace of wear on the high points, this near-Mint example has lovely chocolate-brown surfaces with hints of steel toning. Listed on page 47 of the 2018 Guide Book.
