1785 C NOVA Nova Constellatio Copper, Pointed Rays, Small Date, Crosby 2-A, W-1885, R.4, AU55 PCGS. CAC. The Nova Constellatio copper series, struck in England, is closely related to Gouverneur Morris's 1783 pattern series that was geared toward the establishment of a North American Mint. These copper coins saw widespread circulation in America, and most surviving examples are well worn.
This challenging die pairing is often collected as a major variety since it is the only 1785 Small Date variety. A beautiful olive and chestnut-brown example with an original and smooth appearance. The centers show moderate incompleteness of strike, but actual wear is mostly limited to the all-seeing eye and the large US. Prolonged study beneath a loupe reveals infrequent and unimportant hair-thin marks. Listed on page 56 of the 2018 Guide Book. Population: 2 in 55 (1 in 55+), 2 finer. CAC: 1 in 55, 2 finer (6/17).
