Large Cents
1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, S-2, B-2, High R.4, Fine 12 PCGS. The Chain cents were coined during the first two weeks of March 1793 to the extant of 36,103 coins from five combinations of four obverse dies and two reverse dies. Cataloged by Sheldon numbers, the varieties in order from common to rare are S-3, S-4, S-1, S-2, and NC-1. Although slightly more than 1,000 coins survive among all of the varieties, only about 100 examples of S-2 are known, and most of those are in lower grades than the present piece. This example has lovely olive-brown surfaces with lighter tan on the devices. Scattered marks and slight reverse discoloration are inconsequential. Our EAC grade VG8.
