Large Cents
1809 1C S-280, B-1, R.2, MS63 Brown PCGS. Ex: D. Brent Pogue Collection. The plate coin in the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia. Breen Die State VIII, with prominent die cracks through ES of STATES and into the leaves below, and with small die breaks between the two cracks in that location. Only one die variety is known for the 1809 large cents, and examples are elusive in high grades. This lovely example has satiny luster with delicate blue overtones on its pleasing light olive surfaces. Traces of faded mint color appear in the protected areas on each side. A small splash of maroon patina identifies the provenance of this important example. Our EAC grade AU58.
Ex: Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg Estate (Bowers and Merena, 5/1996), lot 532; Stack's (7/2008), lot 1114; Cardinal Collection (Stack's-Bowers, 1/2013), lot 13021; D. Brent Pogue Collection (Stack's-Bowers, 3/2017), lot 5133. Possibly from the Richard B. Winsor Collection (Chapman Brothers, 12/1895), lot 890.
