Proof Lincoln Cents
1916 1C PR65 Red PCGS. CAC. The 1916 matte proof Lincoln cent comes from a small mintage of 1,050 coins, the bottom rung of a mintage decline that began after 1910, when matte proof cent production hit its peak of 4,083 pieces. The 1916 is the rarest matte proof in high grade after the 1909 VDB. This Gem Red 1916 is tack-sharp and offers a rich array of cherry-red, copper-orange, and golden-green colors. A few scattered specks are seen on the reverse as usual for a coin that has not been dipped. Red Gems are seldom offered at auction, and this issue is extremely rare any finer. Population: 14 in 65 Red, 5 finer. CAC: 5 in 65, 2 finer (6/17).
