Three Cent Nickels
1885 3CN MS65 PCGS. CAC. An underrated and important rarity, the 1885 three cent nickel had a mintage of only 1,000 circulation strikes, far fewer than the 3,790 proofs coined that year. Aside from proof-only issues, this is one of only a few 19th century American coinage issues where proof production exceeded the circulation strike mintage.
This pleasing Gem has delicate champagne toning over frosted gray surfaces and bold design motifs. Mint luster glows beneath the well-struck surfaces, with only a trace of blending at Liberty's highest hair strands. A few scattered gray freckles require a glass for viewing. An important find for the circulation strike specialist, CAC endorsed and very scarce. Population: 18 in 65 (1 in 65+), 16 finer. CAC: 9 in 65, 5 finer (6/17).
