Seated Quarters
1870-CC 25C VF30 PCGS. Briggs 1-A. Only 8,340 Seated Liberty quarters were struck at the Carson City Mint in 1870, the first year of coinage operations at the famous Western facility. As might be expected, only one pair of dies was needed to strike the entire production run. Many survivors show planchet problems due to improper annealing. There was little numismatic interest in branch mint issues at the time and it is doubtful that any specimens were saved by contemporary collectors. As a result, the 1870-CC is the rarest issue of the Carson City series.
This attractive VF30 specimen shows moderate wear on the design elements, but much interior detail remains intact and LIBERTY is bold. The surfaces are lightly abraded, aside from a single gouge at star 6, and pleasing shades of lavender-gray toning blanket both sides. Population: 3 in 30, 15 finer (6/17).
