Walking Liberty Half Dollars
1921-S 50C MS64 PCGS. Although the 1921-S has the highest mintage of the three keys of this date (548,000 pieces), it is the rarest in Mint State. Gem examples are far out of reach for most collectors, and even Choice coins are exceptionally scarce. Recent offerings of near-Gem 1921-S Walkers in our auctions have realized prices ranging from $38,775 (November 2014) to $70,500 (August 2016).
This is a fresh example, housed in a green label PCGS holder. Were it not for a few faint grazes in the right obverse field, it might have garnered an even finer grade, as the majority of each side appears pristine under a loupe. Luster is satiny and sports a warm golden glow. Although the strike is not quite full on Liberty's head or the eagle's trailing leg, the branch hand exhibits complete thumb separation. Finer examples of this issue have neared or exceeded the six-figure mark in recent auctions, showing strong collector demand for high-end examples of this famous San Francisco key. Population: 49 in 64 (3 in 64+), 18 finer (6/17).
