Early Dollars
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, 10 Arrows, B-13, BB-108, R.2, AU58 NGC. Bowers Die State II. This Heraldic Eagle dollar is characterized by a pointed 9 in the date and 10 arrows in the bundle held by the eagle's claw. The die crack to the right of the L in LIBERTY is clear, but there is no evidence of cracking below the date or to the left that would indicated a DS III coin. This is a remarkably well-preserved early dollar. The surfaces retain significant portions of the original satiny mint luster and the rose-gray centers deepen several shades toward the rims. Strike details are strong around the margins but weaker in the centers, especially on the eagle's breast. The nearly mark-free surfaces makes this a perfect example for the type or variety collector.
