Early Dollars
1799 $1 7x6 Stars, B-12, BB-160, R.3, MS62 PCGS. Bowers Die State III. This is a beautiful early dollar -- crisply struck, evenly toned, and unquestionably original in all regards. Viewed at an angle, deep-seated shades of blue and coppery-gold emerge amid soft mint luster. The raised elements are deeply impressed and pinpoint sharp. A glass reveals no imperfections beyond a few tiny ticks, which are invisible to the naked eye. The coin is well-centered with high rims and full dentils.
The BB-160 variety is noted for its "No Berries" reverse, which claims its own listing in the Guide Book. The sharpness of the strike reveals three stems and one weak berry on this coin (although some may argue the fact). No matter. The high quality of the piece takes center stage, and it delivers an impressive performance. Previously housed in an old green label holder from our August, 2016 sale of The Hamilton Collection as lot 4177, the coin has since been reholdered but it is 100% unchanged in any other regard.
