Seated Dollars
1873-CC $1 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. VF. OC-1. The standard silver dollar was abolished by the Mint Act of February 12, 1873, slated to be replaced by the Trade dollar for international trade purposes. The standard silver dollar was of little use in domestic commerce and almost unused entirely in the Eastern states. Silver dollar coinage at the Carson City Mint had been minimal since its beginning in 1870, and the Mint Act taking effect on April 1, 1873, ensured a tiny mintage for the final Seated Liberty dollar from the infant Nevada branch mint: 2,300 coins.
The 1873-CC Seated dollar is the rarest of the Carson City issues in this series, and an incredibly large number of the known coins are impaired in one way or another. NGC has certified only 26 gradable examples, while listing 39 examples with Details grades. The latter pieces are by far the more affordable option for collectors restricted by a budget.
This piece might have qualified for an XF Details designation were the BE in LIBERTY slightly clearer -- the reverse has better sharpness than expected for a VF coin. Nonetheless, the surfaces are cleaned and unnaturally bright with scattered abrasions.
