Morgan Dollars
1880-O $1 MS65 PCGS. The essence of a condition rarity is embodied by the 1880-O Morgan dollar in MS65. Looking at the strikingly low population of this high-mintage New Orleans issue in that grade does not in any way reveal that the issue is readily available just one grade point lower. In addition to its rarity at the Gem level, the issue is almost unknown finer, which further heightens demand for Gems.
This MS65 PCGS coin is among the finest examples of the date that we have handled. Having offered a Gem 1880-O on more than 60 occasions in the past two decades, we have seen a wide range of quality and eye appeal within this grade, as the issue comes with varying potency of luster and strike sharpness. The present coin is easily among the finer MS65s that we have seen. Central detail is well brought up, and the surfaces are frostier than usual. A few faint grazes in the luster are fully in line with the grade. Warm amber-gold accents at the borders frames brilliant interiors. Only two coins are certified finer. Population: 43 in 65 (4 in 65+), 1 finer (6/17).
