Proof Morgan Dollars
1881 $1 PR68 ★ Cameo NGC. Ex: Chappell Collection. The 1881 proof Morgan dollar is a great rarity in the top grades. Only two Ultra/Deep Cameos are known, both Premium Gems at PCGS. This high-end Superb Gem Cameo is two points finer and within the Condition Census. NGC and PCGS each list a single PR69 Cameo finer, but the eye appeal of this piece (designated by the NGC Star) sets it above the other PR68 Cameos known. The strike is needle-sharp, and the virtually brilliant surfaces showcase starkly contrasted surfaces. The preservation is essentially flawless.
The 1881 proof Morgan comes from a mintage of 984 pieces, struck with a single die pair. Most of these (700) were delivered in the first quarter to supply the initial demand for proof sets of the new year. Proof production fell of to almost nothing in the second and third quarters of the calendar year, and then it rebounded again in December (349 coins delivered) as usual for the Christmas gifting season. Census: 7 in 68 Cameo (1 in 68 ★), 1 finer (6/17).
