Proof Morgan Dollars
1893 $1 ★PR68 NGC. Ex: Chappell Collection. The 1893 proof Morgan comes from a healthy mintage 792 coins, which were delivered as usual at quarterly intervals with the largest quantities in the first and last quarters of the calendar year. This issue is frequently seen poorly struck -- Dave Bowers comments: "a result of poor workmanship -- the dies were spaced too far apart." Poor sharpness can have a negative affect on grade in some cases, no doubt contributing to the thin population of proof 1893 dollars in Superb Gem condition. This non-Cameo lacks nothing in strike or eye appeal, and the surfaces are pristine. Beautiful old-time proof set toning paints each side in concentric mint-gold, blue, violet, and golden-orange hues. The obverse displays modest field-motif contrast even through the patina. Census: 6 in 68 (1 in 68+, 1 in 68 ★), 2 finer (6/17).
