Early Quarter Eagles
1804 $2 1/2 14 Stars Reverse, BD-2, R.4, MS61 NGC. This early quarter eagle was produced to the extent of only 3,327 pieces. The coins were minted with both 13 and 14 stars on the reverse, the latter variety being the more common in today's hobby. Nevertheless, the 14 Star Reverse is still a rarity in all grades, with an estimated 150-200 examples believed extant. One of the few certified Mint State survivors, the present example possesses bright, orange-gold surfaces with a tinge of milky-green color intermingled on the obverse. Well struck by the standards of the issue, the devices reveal only a few isolated areas of weakness, and a few adjustment marks are located on the reverse rim. A lightly abraded, nicely lustrous survivor of this rare gold production.
