Proof Liberty Quarter Eagles
1901 $2 1/2 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. With 223 specimens struck, the 1901 quarter eagle edges out the 1900 for the highest mintage in the Liberty Head proof series. With a variety of examples to chose from, the connoisseur will seek out the best affordable specimen, and for many collectors building a Gem set, the PR65 Deep Cameo piece offered here might be the perfect coin. Both sides offer absolute black-and-gold contrast between sharply struck, heavily frosted devices and the powerful mirrors.
The contrasted look was short-lived for gold proofs, when the subsequent Mint preference for all-brilliant proofs was employed from 1902 to 1907 and proofs no longer were struck with Deep Cameo contrast. That fact only adds to the appeal of the current 1901 example. We note a few small planchet dimples and other minor disturbances that are visible on close inspection, mostly at the margins and non-disturbing to the eye. Population: 4 in 65 Deep Cameo, 18 finer (6/17).
