Indian Quarter Eagles
1911-D $2 1/2 MS65+ NGC. Strong D. In the 1950s and 1960s the 1911-D quarter eagle emerged as a key date in 20th century numismatics, as its low mintage of only 55,680 pieces was perceived as a mark of rarity. While it is now known that a low mintage does not necessarily mean a coin is scarce, in the case of the 1911-D the correlation has remained legitimate. Even following the advent of third party grading, when many issues previously thought to be scarce were discovered to be somewhat available, the 1911-D quarter eagle has remained an elusive and sought-after key issue. Mike Fuljenz rates the date as the scarcest in the series overall, and only in Choice and Gem condition is it rivaled by a few other, conditionally rare issues. Most examples experienced light to moderate circulation, resulting in a number of XF and AU coins having been certified; but, even at these levels the date draws active collector interest. At the Gem level, the 1911-D is a formidable rarity. The mint luster on this example is frosted and, unlike lower-graded pieces, there are no obvious or distracting marks. Even orange-gold color. Census: 79 in 65 (3 in 65+, 1 in 65), 2 finer (6/17).
