Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1865 $3 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1865 is one of the most challenging issues in the three dollar series with an emission of just 1,140 pieces. Bowers and Winter (2005) estimate that only 100 examples have survived in all grades, with just 12 to 15 pieces known in Uncirculated grades. That significantly revises the long-accepted estimate by Akers (1979), who wrote that he had seen only "two full Mint State pieces." The high grade rarity of this issue is significant, and it is more elusive in mint condition than some of the later, lower mintage, issues such as the 1881 and 1885.
Outstanding semiprooflike fields show moderate contrast against the frosty devices. Lovely red patina fills the protected areas, while the rest of the surfaces are yellow-gold. Careful inspection with a loupe reveals only a few minor marks. An appealing near-Gem. Population: 4 in 64, 3 finer. CAC: 1 in 64, 1 finer (6/17).
