Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1877 $3 MS63 NGC. Ex: Princess Collection. The 1877 three dollar gold piece is a low-mintage key in the series, with a tiny business-strike production of 1,468 pieces. The Panic of 1877 probably discouraged coin collecting in general, and more expensive gold coin collecting in particular, that year. In any case, 19th century gold collectors almost always preferred to acquire proof examples of Philadelphia Mint issues to update their collections every year, and few regular-issue coins were preserved. Despite the reported mintage of just 20 pieces, proofs are seen more often than high-grade business strikes in today's market.
The present coin is an impressive Select specimen, with lightly marked lemon-yellow surfaces and prooflike fields throughout. The design elements are well-detailed, with just a touch of the usual softness on the ribbon bow. The overall presentation is most attractive for this elusive gold issue. Census: 1 in 63, 0 finer (6/17).
