Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1878 $3 MS66 PCGS. The Mint famously overestimated the demand for smaller denomination gold coins leading up to the moment where paper currency and gold reached parity in late 1878 or early 1879. As it turns out, the public had grown accustomed to walking around with lightweight paper money rather than cumbersome coinage. Demand never materialized, so the 82,304 coins minted simply sat in storage. Today, the 1878 three dollar can be found with patient searching in grades as high as MS66, but rarely finer. This rose and green-gold Premium Gem is unmarked with glistening frost over each side. Well-struck with limited softness on the lower reverse.
