Early Half Eagles
1802/1 $5 BD-2, High R.4, AU58 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. A crack connects the bases of 18, and various clash marks are seen throughout the reverse. BD-2 is regarded as a fairly available variety, but that must be taken in context. Approximately 5,000 to 7,000 coins were struck from this set of dies, and only 75 to 100 pieces are believed known. Whether in absolute or conditional terms, the 1802/1 BD-2 half eagles are rare. The popularity of the obvious overdate puts added collector demand on the small population of surviving specimens.
Copious luster radiates from the recesses of this semireflective five dollar. The design elements, including the stars, neck feathers, and legends, are pinpoint-sharp throughout. Clearly borderline Uncirculated without any obvious indications of friction or blending.
