Liberty Double Eagles
1857-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Medium S. Although not pedigreed on the holder, this Choice 1857-S "Spiked Shield" double eagle likely originated in the S.S. Central America treasure. The die variety is consistent with a large portion of the pieces recovered from the shipwreck, and the glowing, faintly textured surfaces are virtually unmistakable. This piece is razor-sharp and showcases lovely orange-gold luster that deepens toward the borders. A loupe reveals a few trivial ticks on Liberty's cheek and in the adjacent field, but the coin is otherwise Gem-quality -- the eye appeal is without a doubt superior to that of most MS64s. An outstanding coin in every respect.
