Medals and Tokens
Large Lincoln Medal and Plaque, 28 x 22 Inches, Cast Bronze. Victor David Brenner's bust of Lincoln -- later used on the Lincoln cent -- is depicted on this cast bronze plaque in medallic form next to the text of the Gettysburg address. We believe this is one of fewer than a dozen such plaques created between 1908 and 1909 by Gorham Company, possibly for Brenner himself, that were later placed in schools and other public buildings. We are aware of one other such plaque that was purchased by the city of New York and placed on the facade of Brooklyn Borough Hall.
This uniface plaque measures 28 x 22 inches and weighs approximately 42 pounds, made from cast bronze. It is in used condition with a few light abrasions and a trace of edge wear, but no significant damage. The circular medallic reproduction of Brenner's Lincoln is in high relief, bolted to the back of the bronze tablet (as made), and measures 6.75" in diameter. V.D. BRENNER is lettered at the edge. Raised letters in brassy-gold color form the Gettysburg address, which stands out against the stippled, deep-bronze tablet background. A large reproduction of Abraham Lincoln's signature is at the lower-right corner. With fewer than a dozen of these plaques known today, it is a rare and important example of Brenner's medallic art.
